Gates cause more inspection failures than any other part of the barrier, which is ironic, because gate rules are the simplest to understand. Here is what a compliant gate must do.
The latch release must sit high enough that a small child cannot reach it, generally 1.5 metres from the ground when on the outside of the gate, or lower placements are permitted only with compliant shielding that stops small fingers reaching through or over. Exact geometry depends on the standard that applies to your pool, which is part of what an inspection confirms.
Inspectors do not just look at gates, they test them the way we describe in our preparation guide: released from multiple positions including gently resting on the latch. That last position is where tired hinges fail. Test it yourself this weekend, it takes thirty seconds.
Hinge tension is an adjustment, not a replacement. Latch repositioning is minutes of work. Even a full self-closing hinge set is a modest hardware cost. If your gate fails any of the tests above, fix it before the inspection, or book a fence inspection and get the full barrier checked properly at the same time.
